In January 2020, a life-changing virus (legally named the coronavirus, also known as covid-19) made the world sit up and take notice. This unfortunate phenomenon opened up people’s eyes and made them see things in a completely different way. It changed people, their lifestyles and health habits.
People began to realise the need for physical exercise. Physical exercise or activity can improve our health and reduce the risk of several diseases like cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. It can also have long-term or immediate health benefits. Once we start exercising regularly not only do we notice our health improving drastically but we also feel a change in the quality of our life. Having a balanced diet can help you get the adequate amount of nutrition on one day. It is necessary for the body because poor nutrition can contribute to stress, tiredness and our capacity to work.
We should also take care of our mental health as it contributes greatly to keeping our body healthy. By taking care of our mental health we learn to calm ourselves when we are stressed and while we are feeling an outburst of anger. Yoga is one thing that helps mental health and calming skills tremendously.
When we relate all acts of keeping healthy to Islam, we find that every act that we perform in Islam is an act that will help our physical and mental health. For example, when we pray Salah we give a much needed exercise to the body. The foods which Islam has recommended like dates, olives and honey are all healthy and will help us.
We now know that the phrase “Health is the Best Wealth” truly gives a large meaning to our life, as health is considered the most valuable and precious for every individual. Without health, we would not be able to focus on our daily tasks or even enjoy leisure time. When we have proper health, we are able to attain joy. Good health means not only the absence of diseases in the body but also a complete physical, mental, social as well as spiritual well-being of an individual.
